What "Rastafarianism" is ?

Rastafari, also known as Rastafarianism, is an Abrahamic religion that developed in Jamaica during the 1930s. It is classified as both a new religious movement and a social movement by scholars of religion. There is no central authority in control of the movement and much diversity exists among practitioners, who are known as Rastafari, Rastafarians, or Rastas.
Rasta beliefs are based on a specific interpretation of the Bible. Central is a monotheistic belief in a single God, referred to as Jah, who partially resides within each individual. Rastafari also maintains that Jah incarnated in human form as Jesus Christ. Rastas accord Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia between 1930 and 1974, central importance; many regard him as the Second Coming of Christ and thus Jah incarnate, while others see him as a human prophet who fully recognized the inner divinity in every individual. Rastafari is Afrocentric and focuses attention on the African diaspora, which it believes is oppressed within Western society, or "Babylon". Many Rastas call for this diaspora's resettlement in Africa, a continent they consider the Promised Land of "Zion". Some practitioners extend these views into black supremacism. Rastas refer to their practices as "livity". Communal meetings are known as "groundations", and are typified by music, chanting, discussions, and the smoking of cannabis, the latter regarded as a sacrament with beneficial properties. Rastas emphasise what they regard as living "naturally", adhering to ital dietary requirements, twisting their hair into dreadlocks, and following patriarchal gender roles.
Rastafari originated among impoverished and socially disenfranchised Afro-Jamaican communities in 1930s Jamaica. Its Afrocentric ideology was largely a reaction against Jamaica's then-dominant British colonial culture. It was influenced by both Ethiopianism and the Back-to-Africa movement promoted by black nationalist figures such as Marcus Garvey. The movement developed after several Protestant Christian clergymen, most notably Leonard Howell, proclaimed that Haile Selassie's crowning as Emperor of Ethiopia in 1930 fulfilled a Biblical prophecy. By the 1950s, Rastafari's counter-cultural stance had brought the movement into conflict with wider Jamaican society, including violent clashes with law enforcement. In the 1960s and 1970s it gained increased respectability within Jamaica and greater visibility abroad through the popularity of Rasta-inspired reggae musicians, most notably Bob Marley. Enthusiasm for Rastafari declined in the 1980s, following the deaths of Haile Selassie and Marley, but the movement survived and has a presence in many parts of the world.
The Rasta movement is decentralised and organised on a largely cellular basis. There are several denominations, or "Mansions of Rastafari", the most prominent of which are the Nyahbinghi, Bobo Ashanti, and the Twelve Tribes of Israel, each offering a different interpretation of Rasta belief. There are an estimated 700,000 to 1 million Rastas across the world. The largest population is in Jamaica, although communities can be found in most of the world's major population centres. Rastas come from various ethnic groups although the majority are of black African descent and some Mansions only accept black members.

Introduction to Practical Buddhism

Practical Buddhism is known by various names as an ex. Sinhala Buddhism, Popular Buddhism. It means the arrival of a foreign religion to a particular culture, its interconnection with the prevailing culture, and its existence. The new religious system that resulted from the Jambudweepa's arrival to the diverse Sri Lankan culture, blended with the civilization of Lakdiva and survived is the meaning of the term of Practical Buddhism in Sri Lanka. According to the chronicles of ancient Ceylon, the various religions of the people of Sri Lanka fell into Buddhism and Buddhism became the dominant religion in general. In this case, elements of the prevailing cultures of also leaked to Buddhism.
People's minds are diverse. A timeless, habitually trained mental existence cannot be abandoned at once. Such an endeavor will result in the rejection of immigration. The substitute for this is a good answer. This is what happened to Buddhism in Hela deep or Sri Lanka. Since the Buddha's arrival in Sri Lanka, there has been a knowledge of Buddhism and the existence of Buddhism to some extent. Hence, Buddhism spread rapidly after the arrival of the Arahath Mahinda with the four clans of Yaksha, Naga, Raksha and Deva. The rituals in Hela (Sri Lanka) were also leaked to Buddhism. By this time the Mauryan culture had joined the Buddhism. Ceylon culture was also added to this in Sri Lanka.
Primitive cultures such as tree worship and rock worship were already available all over the country. Religions such as the worship of the deads and the worship of Gods were also directly related to the tribe. It is quite difficult to directly reject such creeds. It is better to substitute for it. Tree worship was replaced by the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. The Pilgrimage to the Dead and Rock were replaced by Dagoba worship. Instead of worshiping God, worshiping the Buddha, and offering merits to the Gods were all part of it. Through that, it does not directly reject the prevailing culture. Buddhism and its teachings were not affected in bad because of that. Buddhism mixed with the culture and spread among the people. This is practical Buddhism.
Adherence to the prevailing cultural elements and joining in all the activities of daily life is Practical Buddhism. The uniqueness of this, is, that it does not damage the context of Buddhism. It is close to the culture that existed only to get closer to people's lives. Birth, first meal, ear piercing, reading books at first time, birthdays, special happy or sad events, puberty, marriage, death are major events throughout life. These events are the mixing of Buddhism with the prevailing customs, and taking precedence is the practical Buddhism.
Buddhism was using for Government Consultation. King Ashoka was also influenced by it. Due to religious, political and cultural integration, Buddhism was integrated into all aspects of social life, economics and art, etc.
So as not to damage the content of Buddhism, In conjunction with the cultural events of Lanka, All the opportunities of life creation, development and survival in accordance with Buddhism, can be described as practical Buddhism.

Behind the Erotic

The vendors on the street sell kamasutra packaged as paintings or books or crude carvings depicting various forms of lovemaking. And yet, there is an intrigue around the erotic sculptures of Khajuraho that adorn the walls of these temples. It’s a wonder why the Chandelas, who ruled over 1000 years ago built these monuments which represent love and lust in various forms. And it is not just the Chandelas. Lets revisit India during the 9th- 12th centuries – from North to South, there are many temples with erotic sculptures. The Chalukyas and the Hoysala temples have carved them on their walls, even if they are not as explicit as those in Khajuraho or Konark.
There seems to be different interpretations regarding the erotic sculptures of Khajuraho- from stories to spiritual beliefs. The moon always evokes romance and it is little wonder then that the descendants of the celestial moon god would build monuments that stand for love. The story goes that a beautiful woman called Hemavathy was bathing in the dark under moonlight, when she was seduced by the moon himself. She ran into the forests for refuge and raised her son, Chandravarman alone. The moon, however, promised her that their son would one day rule over a kingdom. True to his word, Chandravarman grew up to establish the Chandela dynasty. It is believed that he was influenced by his mother’s story and so he built temples with sculptures depicting human passions and probably, the futility of the same.
Here is another belief that says the carvings of mithunas are symbols of “good luck” along with several sculptures that showcase mythical creatures. Another interpretation says they served as a form of sex education, by rekindling passions in the ascetic minds of people, who were probably influenced by Buddhism.
And there are several interpretations that speak of varying beliefs in Hinduism that seem to be in the fore. One of them speaks about leaving your lust and desires behind before entering the temple, which is probably why there are no carvings of sex inside the temples. The Mithunas or the couples in love are only portrayed on the outside walls of the shrines.
The Chausath Yogini temple, a Tantric temple dedicated to 64 goddesses is the oldest temple in Khajuraho. A mystical air hangs around it, although all the shrines are empty. It is believed that Khajuraho is charged with energy and the 64 yoginis control the very essence of life, balancing both body and mind together. While reading upon various Tantric beliefs, one of them even compared the Mithunas making love as a metaphor , representing the sexual imagery of the life force an union of Shiva and Shakthi. The philosophy, even extends to the architecture. Some see even the design as a symbol of the union of Shiva and Savitri.
Another interpretation, even goes to say that the temples themselves are designed as a form of the “seductress”.And there is this belief centered around the Tantric cult that explains that the sculptures are metaphors and are actually a form of language, a form of educating the various doctrines of the cult through symbols and imagery.
When coming back to the 22 remaining temples, dedicated to Jainism and Hinduism, there is more to them than just the sexual imagery. They are divided in three main groups – Western, Eastern and Southern. Most of the erotic sculptures are seen in the Western Group of temples. A few temples in the Eastern Group are dedicated to Jain teerthankaras.
The sculptures are grouped into five broad categories. The first category is the cult images and they are built exactly as prescribed in the manual – the Shilpashastra. You can see some of them carved as the teerthankaras in the Jain museum.
The second category are the ones you see in the reliefs and niches and they usually represent attendants, the guardian deities, the gandharvas, the shiva ganas, the Ashta dikpalas among others.
The third, the Apsaras, also referred to as sapna sundaris. The sculptors seemed to have run riot carving these beautiful women in various activities. They seem so life like and beautiful and every minute detail has been given importance to These graceful nymphs portray human emotions. You seem them dancing, painting, holding a parrot, caressing a baby or scratching their backs or just undressing. These are not exclusive to Khajuraho as well as you can see them in several Hoysala temples as well besides others
Finally, you see the famous erotic sculptures of Khajuraho. Mithunas mating to group sex to even scenes of unnatural sex. And while they do remain in your face, it is such a pity that we miss out the rest of art carved on these temples
